El ranking reúne más de 100 películas estrenadas durante los últimos 20 años.

Huye fue elegida como la película con mejor guion del siglo, seguida por Eterno resplandor de una mente sin recuerdos, Red Social y Parásitos. Todas películas que obtuvieron un Oscar por mejor guion en sus respectivos años.

La elección de las 101 películas con mejor guion del siglo XXI fue realizada por el Sindicato de Guionistas de Estados Unidos (WGA), donde entre las más recientes del ranking destacan Promising Young Woman y Nomadland, ambas estrenadas en 2020 y que ocupan los puestos 23 y 97 respectivamente. 

Dentro del listado podemos encontrar películas para todos los gustos, como las cintas de superhéroes Batman: el caballero de la noche y Pantera Negra, las películas animadas Toy Story 3, Intensamente y Spider-Man: Un Nuevo Universo, y producciones fuera de Estados Unidos como Y tu mamá también (México), Amélie (Francia), Roma (México) y Parásitos (Corea del Sur).
